Saggar vessel with basketry

This piece was fired in a clay container called a saggar. The unique colors and patterns on the clay surface come from oxides, metals, salt, and organic matter with which it was fired. The smooth surface comes from burnishing the clay. Reed and sea grass were woven onto the vessel.
