Candy Raku is a slip resist method of firing. The pottery is coated with a slip resist (clay mixture) to which sugar has been added, and as it dries the slip cracks. Smoke enters the cracks during the firing process and leaves the black patterns on the clay body. The sugar adds variation to the patterns due to additional carbonization. The resist is removed when the firing is completed. The smooth surface on the vessel comes from burnishing the clay. Pine needles were woven on to the piece.
